When my wife and I went on our honeymoon, I got travelers health insurance. When I took her on a surprise trip to Portugal two years later, I got it again. Neither of us have any major health concerns; what was I afraid of?

Of course there’s always the worst-case scenarios. But for me, it was mostly about peace of mind, and this peace of mind was particularly affordable. Just today I quoted a 33 year old for an 8 day trip; it’s $20.48 for him to get $1million in coverage with no deductible.

The odds of anything going wrong were very low, and unrealized. But had something gone wrong and I hadn’t had the travelers health insurance, what would I have had to do?

First I would need to find a doctor in a place where I don’t speak the language. I don’t know how to find them, or if they’ll be able to understand me. They probably don’t take my insurance, and even if my insurance was to be involved, I would likely have to meet my substantial deductible before they would pay anything. On top of the billing hell that is already the norm of the American healthcare experience, I shudder when I try to imagine coordinating with them across time zones, and then them successfully interacting with another country’s doctor and get payments figured out.

If faced with that scenario, I would gladly pay a lot of money to avoid that call. And with the Travelers Health Insurance plan, I effectively can. Before leaving the states, I downloaded the app and had a copy of the policy on my phone. If there had been an injury, I would have been able (once having wifi access) to call GeoBlue. Their 24 hour center would find an in-network doctor closest to me and prepare the way for my arrival, while also covering the costs. The doctor would meet Western medical standards, and also be fluent in English.

Thankfully, I’ve never had to use the plan – but I’ve had a number of clients who have! Every experience was positive for them, whether it involved a injury, hospital stay, or a sick kiddo.
